Turbot

Turbot (Scophthalmus Maximus) a European flatfish, that has a brown knobby upper side and is prized as food. It is found throughout the Eastern Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands region and also widely found in the Northwest Atlantic.

Turbot is a flat fish with a black-brown skin and a length of about 500 cm. They prefer cold temperatures and softer bottoms of sand and mud. Turbots can weigh as much as 25 pounds and has a life span of 21 years. They feed on crustaceans, squid, and a variety of fish species.

Females Turbots can produce about 60,000 to 80,000 eggs and they can only reproduce it they are about 2 feet and 9 years of age.

United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Germany are the main producers and consumers of Turbot Fish. They have grown Turbots in onshore tanks which is the most common method and cages which is still in an experimental stage. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations the Turbot fish global production in 2002 was valued at USD 41.38 million.
