TipThePlanet:Guide to adding information
Helpful tip! - Log into the site to make editing easier
Firstly, thanks for your edits - it'll help improve this site and spread knowledge. Editing a wiki is incredibly easy, all you need to do is click on the edit tab at the top left of the screen, near the logo. Here's some more information to help you with the formatting:
1) You have a basic understanding of the way the wiki system works. Here's a great page on how to edit in Mediawiki. Also, please read our Editing rules
2) You find the category on the Main Page that best suits your info - if you can't find a category, you can always create a new one.
3) Have a search to see if you can already find information about the topic you are about to add in the search box on the left of the page. If there's something similar, see if you can edit that topic rather than adding a new one.
4) This wiki provides information on specific subjects, as well as tips about that subject. Here are a few example best pages:
- Information about a certain subject should be written like a document, a bit like Wikipedia - Rain
- A group of different categories - Tips on energy
- A specific tip - Fish not to buy or Air dry washing
- A reference page - Environmental news tips
Where possible, try to break up paragraphs rather than adding big long blocks of text (although sometimes this will be necessary). Also, please highlight tips by adding tip formatting around the edge. For more information check out this page
5) When creating a new page by placing the square brackets around a term, please make sure that the page name is the best name for the page. For example, create a page called 'green travel' rather than a page entitled 'why everyone should think about green travel' or 'green travel is something you should think about'. This is a bad page name - Are manufactured logs toxic or are they better than firewood?. Firewood is better, then pose the question on the firewood page.
6) Please make sure you present a balanced argument and you include information from a number of sources and reference them properly, like on this page Fish not to buy. Here's a guide to linking within a wiki
7) You might also want to add an organization, or any products to the organizations or products section.
8) When adding photos, make sure you position them in properly and give them a title, like the logo on this page Recycling tips. Here is more information about adding and editing images
9) Please do not delete something just because you don't agree - the value of this site is via discussion, not censorship.
10) If you add some text, try suggesting some of the content link to other pages. For example, if you add a word or set of words there should be a page for - then at least someone knows to find or build the page later. For example, in the sentence, 'Thinking about Double glazing and green energy in the home' includes two other pages and helps people find out more.
11) Put the most relevant links to other pages on the site at the bottom or the top of the page, like this: Electric oven
Other tips
- If you think a page has a poor title and want to change its name - follow this guide for Moving a page
- Here is some more information on formatting a page
- If you want to add a table, here's some useful information
- If you feel someone has spammed a page, or a set of edits is very poor, you can go into the history section and 'rollback' to go back to previous incarnations of that page.
Discussions
If you disagree with something - start a discussion page about it as opposed to wiping it out - often discussions are the best way we can come to a great undertanding of the problems at hand! You'll see the discussion tab at the top next to edit!!
