[edit] Skin whitening treatment
- Skin whitening treatment is commonly prescribed by dermatologists to reduce abnormally high pigmentation in certain areas of a patient's skin such as moles and birthmarks. However it is also a popular option publically with many skin whitening products available over the counter and online. When considering skin whitening treatment on your own always be extremely careful to do effective research and make sure you know the risks involved. This is because there is some evidence to suggest that some of the active ingredients used in publically available skin-whitening products can be damaging to the skin.
[edit] Hydroquinone skin care tips
- You should perform a skin sensitivity test before application. Do this by rubbing a the hydroquinone cream to a tiny area of hyper-pigmented skin. If there is no itching or redness occurring within 24 hours, you can start treatment.
- wash and dry the skin before the application of a thin layer of cream twice daily to the areas in need of whitening.
- Rub extremely gently into the skin in round circular motions until it has all been absorbed.
- Apply sufficient cream to cover the hyper pigmented areas only and avoid application to regular skin, as otherwise it will whiten as well.
- Wash your hands straight after application unless these are the areas of treatment.
- Don't use other medicated topical products (particularly peroxide) on the same skin area at the same time unless you are directed so by a doctor.
- Don't use near the eyes or mouth, or any other body openings
- When using other cosmetics, for example sunscreens and moisturiser, apply hydroquinone first, wait a few minutes, then apply them over the top. If any irritation is felt wash off immediately.
[edit] Hydroquinone cream side effects
- Hydroquinone cream is usually very well tolerated when used correctly. Some may experience minor and temporary skin irritations including mild itching or stinging and reddening of the skin if these do not subside it is important to stop using the cream immediately. Side effects that should warrant stopping the cream and seeking medical advice immediately include severe burning, itching, crusting, or swelling of treated areas and any unusual skin discolouration. Prolonged use of hydroquinone has been associated with the development of exogenous ochronosis (a persistent blue-black pigmentation), especially in Africa, but this is extremely rare. It may be due to other added ingredients such as phenol and resorcinol agents, which are known to cause ochronosis.
[edit] Kojic acid
- Kojic acid is an agent produced by several species of fungi which has the Japanese common name “Koji”. Kojic acid is a by-product in the fermentation process of malting rice, for use in the manufacturing of sake, the Japanese rice wine. Kojic acid is known to also have many antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is a mild inhibitor of the formation of pigment in plant and animal tissues, and is used in food and cosmetics to conserve or change the colors of materials. Kojic acid is also consumed widely in the Japanese diet, with the belief that it is of benefit to health. However, kojic acid is an unstable ingredient when used in cosmetics. Upon exposure to air or sunlight it can turn brown and lose its usefulness. In cosmetics it is used in skin lightening products, creams, lotions and soaps.
[edit] Kojic acid skin care tips
- Treat your skin with the products that contain kojic acid. The most common formulations are kojic acid cream and soaps. There are also some kojic acid lotions. Which one to choose is down to individual preference. The easiest places to find kojic acid products are in the skin-care section of many department stores, drug stores or pharmacy’s. You can also purchase many kojic acid products online but make sure to do your research on suitable brands and products first.
- Clean the skin before applying the kojic acid product. It’s best to use a sensitive gentle cleanser, as skin irritation can exacerbate hyperpigmentation.
- Apply the kojic acid product to just the darkened areas of the skin that you want lightened. Kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase, which regulates production of melanin. By using the product on other non affected areas will cause undesirable lightening, termed hypopigmentation.
- Allow the product to soak into the skin before using any other skin products in the area. This will serve to ensure maximum effectiveness.
- It is recommended to use a strong sunscreen and wear protective clothing while using kojic acid as it reduces the skins natural sun protection effectiveness.
- Continue to use the product for several months before evaluating the final results. Skin bleachers and lighteners act gradually; usually you should see results in 3 months. However, it may take as long as 6 months for the area to be lightened to your satisfaction.
- Once desired result has been achieved discontinue kojic acid use on the skin. Long term use can cause significant skin damage and make you more susceptible to sun damage and the relative diseases associated such as skin cancer
[edit] Side effects of kojic acid
- Kojic acid is more effective than a lot of whitening agents used for the skin, such as glycolic acid. And compared with whiteners such as hydroquinone, it is also lower on the harmful side effects and is therefore less risky. Since it is a natural extract, unlike the chemical-based hydroquinone and glycolic acid, it is more reliable than the latter. Besides, it is also an active ingredient used in the production of some food items. The Japanese consume kojic acid in their daily diet, so it follows that there cannot be anything seriously harmful in it. However, it can lead to mild to severe irritation on some skin types. It can also make the areas on which it is applied more sensitive to the sun than the rest of the body. So once treated by a kojic acid product, you must make sure that you keep your skin is protected by a reliable sun-care cream or lotion and wear protective clothing whilst in the sun.
[edit] Arbutin
- Arbutin is a new type of skin de-pigmentation and whitening agents, an extract of Bearberry plant which produced by a solid /liquid extraction, an environmentally friendly process. Arbutin protect the skin against damage caused by free radicals, Arbutin is a skin whitening agent which is very popular in Japan and Asian countries for skin de-pigmentation, Arbutin inhibits the formation of melanin pigment by inhibiting Tyrosinase activity. It may be used to repress the virulence of bacterial pathogens and to prevent contaminating bacteria, it is also used for treating allergic inflammation of the skin . More recently, Arbutin has been used to prevent pigmentation and to whiten the skin beautifully. It can be used to whiten the skin, to prevent liver spots and freckles, to treat sunburn marks and to regulate melanogenesis.
- Arbutin is very safe skin agent for external use which does not have toxicity, stimulation, unpleasant odor or side effect such as Hydroqinone. The encapsulation of Arbutin constitute a delivery system to potentialize the effect in time. It is a way to incorporate the hydrophilic Arbutin in lipophilic media. Arbutin give three main properties; Whitening effects, anti- age effect and UVB/ UVC filter .
[edit] Glycyrrhetinic acid
- Glycyrrhetinic acid, isolated from Glycyrrihiza glabra (licorice) is widely used in cosmetic industry. Licorice inhibit tyrosinase activity of melanocytes without any cytotoxicity, it also showed that UV-B–induced pigmentation and erythema can be inhibited by topical application of 0.5% Licorice The anti-inflammatory properties of Licorice were attributed to inhibition of superoxide anion production and cyclooxygenase activity.
- As a fungal metabolic product, kojic acid inhibits the catecholase activity of tyrosinase, which is the rate-limiting, essential enzyme in the biosynthesis of the skin pigment melanin. Kojic acid also is consumed widely in the Japanese diet with the belief that it is of benefit to health. Indeed, it has been shown to significantly enhance neutrophil phagocytosis and lymphocyte proliferation stimulated by phytohemagglutinin. Melanocytes treated with kojic acid become nondendritic with a decreased melanin content. Additionally, it scavenges reactive oxygen species that are excessively released from cells or generated in tissue or blood.
- This tyrosinase inhibitor was isolated from a plant herbal extract. The plant roots from which paper mulberry was isolated were collected in Korea. The tyrosinase inhibition of paper mulberry was compared to kojic acid and HQ. The IC50, the concentration causing 50% inhibition of the activity of tyrosinase, was reported to be 0.396% compared to 5.5% for hydroquinone and 10.0% for kojic acid.
