Pool tips
From TipThePlanet
- Make sure you've got the right size filter for your pool, and know how long it should operate daily to keep the water clean.
- Timers on filters should be checked regularly to make sure they are working properly.
- If you heat your pool, consider using solar pool heating. A solar pool heater is simply a large area of black plastic or rubber with tubes through which the pool water circulates and collects heat. See Solar Swimming Pool Heaters. Another option are Solar-Powered Pool Heating Rings, energy-efficient floating rings that gather and amplify sunlight to raise the temperature of an average-sized pool by 3-4 per week when covering just 70% of the surface, without the energy requirements of electrical heaters or the effort required to place, remove, and store traditional tarp covers.
- Heated swimming and spa pools should be kept covered when not in use. See Swimming Pool Covers
- Empty your swimming pool or hot tub on the grass, not into the street. Chlorinated water is harmful to aquatic life. By emptying it into a wooded or grassy area, you are making use of nature's natural filtering action.
- Size your pump for energy efficiency. More information here.
