How to Recycle a Microwave Oven
Think environmentally conscious when it comes time to dispose of your microwave. There are several options for microwave oven disposal to choose from besides the trash dump.
Giving it Away If a microwave oven is still in working condition, the best thing to do is to give it a second life. A working microwave oven can be given away to friends or family or donated to a charity. A working microwave oven can be left in the front yard with a free sign on it. Usually a microwave oven with a free sign will get picked up by a person passing by within a short period of time. It is best to include on the sign that the microwave is in working condition, to assure that it will be picked up.
Giving a microwave oven a second life serves two purposes. It keeps waste out of the trash dump and saves another person the money of buying a new microwave oven.
Recycling Options
If a microwave oven is not in working condition, it can be recycled. Call your local trash disposal company to find out if they recycle microwave ovens. If they do not, ask them if they know a place that does. If your local trash disposal company can not help you, go to Earth911.com. Earth911.com has a search engine that allows you to search for microwave recycling centers in your area. You can also search for recycling centers for various other items in the search engine.
If you are unable to find a local recycling center through your local trash disposal company or through Earth911.com, there are a couple other choices that you still have. Some places take broken microwave ovens and either repair them or salvage parts from them and recycle the leftover parts.
Check with local home appliance repair shops to see if they take broken microwave ovens. Sometimes, home appliance repair shops will repair broken microwaves and resell them, or if unrepairable they will salvage parts out of the broken microwave and recycle the leftover parts.
Another option for broken microwave ovens, is to donate it to Goodwill Industries. Check with your local Goodwill about their policies regarding broken microwave ovens. Many of the Goodwill stores give broken microwave ovens a second life by repairing them and offering them for sale in their stores.

Microwaves - A Buyer's Guide
Microwaves, in the form of microwave and combination ovens, have revolutionised the way we cook food over the last 20 years. With today's busy lifestyles, they have enabled us to prepare food in much less time than using traditional cooking methods.
There are three different types of microwave oven, which are:
One- The standard microwave - microwaves alone are used to cook and defrost food. Two- A microwave with a grill - this has an additional grill fitted allowing you to brown food, such as chips, pizzas and baked potatoes. The grill can be used on its own, or in conjunction with the microwave. Three- A combination oven. This is a combination of a microwave, a grill and a convection oven, which can be used together or on their own.
Not only can microwaves save you time, but they are environmentally friendly as they use up less energy than traditional cookers. It is also possible to cut down on washing up, as meals can be cooked or reheated on the plates from which they will be eaten.
What size of microwave should I buy?
A standardly sized microwave has a volume of about 20-22l, whereas a "family sized" microwave will have a volume or around 26l. Provided you can fit a standard sized plate into the microwave, it should be sufficient for the normal cooking and reheating on a single plate. However, if you are wanting to cook for the entire family, then you would be better off with one of the larger models.
How much power does it need to have?
The higher the power, the faster the food will cook. In addition, remember that if you are cooking larger quantities of food such as in a family sized oven, this will increase the power requirements further (cooking time is dependent on the amount of food being cooked, unlike a conventional oven.) You should in general buy an oven with the highest power you can afford, and not less than 800W for a compact size or 900W for a family size.
Should I get a microwave with a turntable?
Yes, this is a good idea as it will help to ensure that the food is cooked more evenly and you will be less likely to experience "hot spots".
What other features are available?
Some microwaves come equipped with features such as "multiple-sequence cooking". The computer within the microwave changes the power during the defrosting and subsequent cooking of your meal.
Safety Advice
Take care when cooking and reheating meat and poultry - "cold spots" can allow bacteria such as Listeria to survive. Make sure food is cooked and / or heated thoroughly. It is easier to do this if the food is evenly distributed on a covered plate - add water if necessary - if covering with cling film, prick holes in the film to allow the water vapour to escape. Stir the food in the middle of the cooking period, even if you have a turntable, to eliminate cold spots.
Only use microwave safe cookware in the microwave.
Be very careful if you heat any liquids, such as milk or water, in a glass in the microwave. Drinks may not appear to have been overheated, but when the surface tension of the liquid is broken, as you lift it out of the microwave, the boiling contents can explode in your face. To prevent liquids from overheating and becoming "superheated", do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. Let the cup stand for a further thirty seconds before moving or adding anything to it. (See this video of how injury can occur if this advice is not heeded).

Start Recycling with Earth911.com
Recycling has never been easier when you use the tools at Earth911.
Who hasn’t heard that recycling is one of the best ways to protect the environment? There are all sorts of benefits to recycling. Creating aluminum from ore requires 95% more energy than recycling aluminum. Glass can be recycled indefinitely and recycling just one ton saves about ten gallons of oil. The benefit to recycling paper is a bit more obvious. Recycled paper helps reduce the number of trees removed from the world’s forests each year.
Aluminum, glass, and paper are just a few of the items Earth911 can help you recycle. Earth911 allows you to search for a recycling center by type as well as by location. Some of the more uncommon items you can find recycling centers for include hazardous materials like batteries, medications, fire extinguishers, pesticides, and pool chemicals. Common electronic items that many people may not think to recycle are also listed such as video games, MP3 players, office machinery, and televisions. There are even recycling centers for household and gardening items and automobiles along with their various components.
In addition to providing resources for locating recycling centers, Earth911 also has a weekly newsletter that provides information about going green. Tips on recycling, green products, and reducing your carbon footprint have all been past topics.
The information on Earth911 isn’t limited to just their website either. They have an iPhone applications that lets you search from your phone in case you don’t have access to your computer. This makes it easy to recycle while traveling out of town. If your website or blog is green there is also a widget you can use to let your readers learn how easy it is to recycle in their town.
The searchable database provided by Earth911 will help you find recycling locations for items you probably already know you should recycle as well as items you may not have thought about recycling before. Take the time to check out the website and then begin recycling!

Serious Green: Saving Energy By Using The Microwave
The much-maligned microwave--conjuring up images of scary invisible waves and mysterious molecular science--isn't what most of us think of as environmentally friendly. (After all, how could "nuking" something be good for the planet?) But though it sounds counterintuitive, the microwave is one of the most energy-efficient options for cooking our food.
Think of the microwave as a high-pressure shower, and the oven as an overflowing bathtub. The shower delivers only the blast of water to clean you off, whereas taking a bath requires you to fill a whole sloshy tub of water, just so you can soak inside. In the same way, heating up a whole oven for the sake of a little potato uses a lot more energy than a two-minute stint in the microwave.
Indeed, in The Big Green Cookbook, chock-full of tips and recipes for environmentally sound cooking, dietician and microwave fan Jackie Newgent writes, "The microwave oven can reduce energy use by roughly two-thirds compared to a conventional oven." Good news for the planet, and for your busy schedule.
Of course, over-nuking can turn good meat to rubber and fresh bread to a brick. But here are a few ways to use your microwave wisely, after the jump.
Play with the wattage. Just because your microwave goes up to 1200 watts doesn't mean you have to leave it on high power. (If you only used your oven at 500°F, it wouldn't always cook too well, either.) Some foods respond better to lower wattage, for longer times.
Think about steaming. Anything you can steam, you can microwave. Squash, artichokes, and spinach are all pretty safe bets.
Go halfway. Microwaves cook efficiently, but food tends to remain limp. For anything that needs a bit of crisping--say, skin-on chicken, or cheese-topped enchiladas--try starting in the microwave, then finishing under a broiler. (Or in a toaster oven, even more energy-efficient.)
