NAME NATIONALITY PROFESSION BRIEF BIO
George Perkins Marsh American Diplomat, Philologist, Environmentalist He is generally regarded as the Father of the Environmental Movement. His revolutionary book, Man and Nature, was the first modern discussion of our ecological problems. He argued that deforestation could lead to desertification. Referring to the clearing of once-lush lands surrounding the Mediterranean, he asserted "the operation of causes set in action by man has brought the face of the earth to a desolation almost as complete as that of the moon."
John Muir American Engineer, Naturalist, Writer, Botanist He is known as the one of the first conservationists, whose influence is felt worldwide. Named the Father of our National Park System, his activism helped to save the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is now one of the most important conservation organizations in the United States.
William McDonough American Green Architect He is best known for designing environmentally sustainable buildings, manufacturing processes, and materials. McDonough's designs are also noteworthy for markedly increasing productivity and energy efficiency, as well as employee health and satisfaction.
