Gas safety

* Every year around 30 people die from gas related carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and explosions, mainly because their gas appliances have not been properly installed or maintained. Many others also suffer ill health.

• CO is produced when gas does not burn properly.
• You can't see It. You can't taste it. You can't even smell it. But CO can kill in a matter of hours.
• This section covers basic information on what to be alert for and how to avoid risks. Government responsibility for carbon monoxide issues rests with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Health and Safety Executive.

Tiredness, drowsiness, stomach and chest pains, headaches and nausea are all symptoms of CO poisoning and are often mistaken for flu. There is a particular risk when sleeping, as early symptoms cannot be recognised.
