Forestry tips
From TipThePlanet
- Use proper logging and erosion control practices on your forest lands by ensuring proper construction, maintenance, and closure of logging roads and skid trails.
- Report questionable logging practices to state and federal forestry and state water quality agencies.[1]
- Proper planting techniques require the use of good equipment,if the equipment being used is not adequate it should be replaced.[2]
- Seedlings planted must be properly transported, stored and handled at all times.[3]
- Planting must be performed during suitable weather conditions.
- Seedlings should be monitored and inspected continuously ,until they are successfully planted.[4]
- Seedlings need to be in a relatively controlled environment and do best when stored at a temperature between 33-38F with 85-95 percent relative humidity.[5]
- Spray in dry and calm conditions.
- Clean access paths through the forest to keep them usable as it will make life easier for everyone.[7]
- Clean blocked drains to prevent waterlogging and empty silt traps to protect water quality.[8]
- Ensure you have adequate fire insurance cover.
- Mulching improves the health of a tree,it improve soil structure, oxygen levels, temperature and moisture availability.[9]
- Protect soil from eroding.
- Prepare evergreen trees for dry winter weather by watering them more in the fall, especially when rainfall has been limited.[10]
- If a tree shows yellowing, extremely slow growth, or some other sign which might indicate a nutrient deficiency, then fertilizer can be applied at any time during the growing season.[11]
- Over-fertilizing can result in growth that is too fast. This growth might not be very strong or well-formed. More is not better.[12]
- Water the newly planted tree. Allow settling, backfill the remaining soil, and water again. This will eliminate air pockets.[13]
- Forests can cool the planet by absorbing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.[16]
- Forests can also cool the planet by evaporating water to the atmosphere and increasing cloudiness.A deck of white clouds reflects incoming solar radiation straight back out into space.[17]
- Trees can also have a warming effect because they are dark and absorb a lot of sunlight, holding heat near ground level.[18]
