Double glazing
From TipThePlanet
By trapping air between two panes of glass, double-glazing creates an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation.
[edit] Double glazing tips
- Make sure the window frames are of a timber construction. uPVC window frames are very difficult to dispose of responsibly, and their construction pollutes rivers and groundwater a lot. Aluminium window frames have a high embodied energy content; also the house heat can escape very quickly through the frame, thus defeating the object of double glazing! Of course, use natural surface finishes to protect the frames from the elements.
- If you live in a house which you don't own, rented or tied cottage, try sticking bubble-wrap to windows you aren't too fussed about seeing out of. Use a strong double-sided tape.
- Triple glazed windows are even better for insulation.
- Surprisingly, quadruple glazed windows are even better for insulation than triple glazed windows.
- Even more surprising is the fact that quintuple glazed windows are even better for insulation than quadruple glazed windows.
- Double-glazed windows come in a variety of sizes and styles. Check for any planning restrictions on your house due to age and location. Sometimes planning permission may be required, in the case in listed buildings and conservation areas. Also if you are converting a flat window into a bay window. Check this with the local authority.
