A company in Ohio called "vermitech" will install lightswitches that will turn off all the appliances in a room to save energy!

• One computer left on all day results in the emission of 1,500 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year. It would take 100 to 500 trees to absorb that amount of extra carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. See Computer power mangement for more information.

• The average TV is left on standby for 17.5 hours a day, and secondary TVs average at 21.5 hours per day. This means that over the course of a year every household, with 2 TVs, will waste a whopping 35 KWh/ year – that’s the same amount of energy a car uses to drive 25 miles!

• According to the Energy Saving Trust, over the course of a year, a video recorder on standby uses 85% as much energy as it uses playing a tape.

• Changing that little “standby” light on the front of something from green to red doesn’t actually do you – or the planet – much good.

• Mobile phone chargers left plugged in when not charging waste massive amounts of power. Unless you turn it off at the wall it’s still costing you money and wasting energy.

• If everyone in the UK turned off their TV overnight it would save more than £66 million worth of in electricity each year, which would floodlight 250,000 Premiership football matches.

• Use switches, such as those that are on surge protectors, to completely turn off electronic devices like TVs and computers, instead of leaving them on standby.

• Electrical power has changed our lives and given us phenomenal freedoms, from talking to people around the world, to going to the moon. But do we know just how much power we are using when we switch things off or put them into standby mode? Electronic devices like TV or video or stereos, anything which has a remote control, have to be live so you can switch on remotely.

• There is nothing to stop you switching it off physically, but if you are going to switch it off with the remote control, then something at the other end within the box has to be live.

• Standby power can range between 10 and 15 watts, and occasionally beyond. On its own, this is not much. But if you get half a dozen devices on standby, it is the equivalent of a 60 watt bulb. A PC is always using energy unless it is totally switched off - Tracking standby power is difficult, but Mr Field has developed a device to see just how much power we are burning in standby. A laptop computer, for example, can be plugged into the mains via his meter which reads the voltage and wattage used.The device is useful because the way the systems draw standby power can be difficult to monitor.

• All around the house we bleed power. The modern home is permanently on standby, full of equipment that sits "half on", waiting to spring immediately to life when we ask it to. Figures on standby power use in the UK home are astonishing:

* Stereos on standby cost £290m and produce 1.6 million tonnes of CO2
* VCRs and DVD cost £263m and produce 1.06 million tonnes of CO2
* TVs on standby cost £88m and produce 480,000 tonnes of CO2 

• It means that in one year, in the UK alone, our equipment on standby produces a total of 3.1 million tonnes of CO2. If you really want to be green with your PC, when you're done using it turn it off. The PC is a special case because if you don't turn it off completely, in other words pull the switch on the back, it's always drawing some kind of power. If a million PC users switched to a more efficient power supply, it would save almost the equivalent of 250 thousand litres of gasoline a day. By the end of 2004 there were 820 million PCs in use around the world, and by 2007 that will top a billion. No matter how easy these devices make our lives there is little doubt that they are costing us and the planet dearly.
