Cogeneration and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Tips
From TipThePlanet
- CHP is an efficient technology for generating both electricity and heat.
- In a CHP plant, heat and electricity are generated simultaneously in a single process.
- The basic elements of a CHP plant are one or more prime movers used to drive the electrical generators. The heat generated during this process can be used for a variety of purposes such as space heating or industrial processes.
- Using the 'waste' heat produced from the generation of electricity results in 35% less fuel consumption than if separate processes were used for producing electricity and heat.
- Biomass is ideally suited to CHP: it can be implemented as a biomass boiler driving a steam turbine, or in the form of a biogas fuelling an engine or gas turbine. Using biomass instead of fossil fuels for CHP makes an environmentally friendly technology even friendlier.
