Car Accident Tips
From TipThePlanet
When you are involved in a car accident, fast response saves lives. Most accidents are assumed due to negligence on either or both of the drivers. If death or major injuries have occured, pecuniary damages are compensated accordingly.
[edit] Keep the following points in mind:
- The first thing is to do when an accident occurs is to check your own condition and then the condition of your fellow passengers. Once you have assured yourself that all is well, then go to the other car to make sure the passengers and driver do not need urgent help.
- Move the cars to the side, away from ongoing traffic. If the cars are so damaged that the cars cannot be moved, switch on your hazard warning lights and set up flares if you have them.
- Call the police immediately and report the accident, detailing where and how the accident occured, if there are any casualties, if an ambulance is needed, a fire brigade etc. The more information you give, fast and efficient help can be given immediately.
- Exchange information like name, address, phone number, license numbers etc. Also note any witnesses to the accident, the names, addresses and phone numbers of the other passengers if any, the insurance company's name and number, the policy etc.
- Note the description of each car, the model, year, make, color etc. Also write down where exactly the accident occured, how it happened, and any other details you think might is relevant. If you are too shook up to use a pen to write these things, use the mobile's inbuilt voice recorder feature and record your observations.
- Then wait by the respective cars for the police to arrive. Do not discuss the accident with the other driver. This is crucial since during legal proceedings small talk is often blown out of propotion by lawyers which could hurt your legal standing.
- Never admit fault, or disclose things like medical conditions, your drinking habits, or anything similar that the courts would take as negligence.
- Call your insurance company and lawyer immediately. The sooner the better in accident cases as they know what are the proceedings to be done to prevent you from being unnecessarily sued.
- Finally meditate and try to remain calm. Trauma and shock are often felt after a while. Recognize the symptoms and give your mind and your body time to cope with the aftereffects.
